Choosing The Right Extension Ladder

Susan Dean asked:

In the wide world of ladders, there are many various types including the extension ladder. These ladders are almost necessary for those who own a home or a business. You may need to climb up to patch a hole in the roof or to check the seal around a window. You may need to do that necessary job of cleaning out the gutters. There are several things that you need to consider when it comes to these choices though. Purchasing the right one for the job is crucial because it will protect you, support you, and allow you to easily accomplish the task at hand. The extension ladder is often the best choice to have around the house.

Various Options To Think About

There are various types of ladders out there other than an extendable style. For example, you could use a folding option but these do not usually stand as high therefore limiting your usage especially if you need to use it for very high places.

How To Decide

The ladder that you go with should meet the needs that you are likely to have. Here are some things that you should consider when purchasing the right ladder for.

· Start with what you plan to do with it. If you own a two or more story home, you should consider the extension since it does go higher than other options out there. If you only have a ranch, the folding option may be enough to do the job needed.

· If you plan to paint a ceiling, for example, you may want to think about accessories for the ladder. For many, this could be things to hold your tools in place or it could be scaffolding to allow you to walk back and forth to reach that ceiling. Some ladders can transform to allow this process to happen.

· Next, make sure to consider the material that the ladder is made from. Many are made from aluminum or fiberglass. The difference is mainly in their weight and strength. If you are a heavy set person, insure that the ladder that you choose is capable of holding you and the items that you plan to carry up it.

The good news is that there are hundreds of manufacturers as well as many designs to choose from. Taking the time to do your homework will help you purchase the best possible ladder for your specific needs. Ladder designs such as the folding or extension ladder are great options for people in particular who work outside whether home or business.

How can I safely stand on a ladder in my attic?

B to the Mac asked:

I have a high, lofted ceiling in my attic and I need to stand on a ladder to repair a duct. I was thinking of getting some plywood up there and laying it over the rafter and standing on the ladder that way, but I don’t know what I’m doing. How can I stand on a ladder in my attic?

Getting Onto the Ladder

Robin J. Elliott asked:

I was on the top of a very high, convex, brown concrete sculpture. Far below me, people were happily milling around and laughing in a plaza, eating ice cream and playing with their children. I couldn’t move backwards or forwards as I was afraid of slipping off this dome that I was on, and fall to my death below - I was really afraid. Then, in front of me I suddenly saw a steel ladder! (By now, you have probably correctly guessed that this was a dream I had - last night.) The ladder was my only hope of salvation and the only way to safety, yet it was even scarier to reach out and get onto the ladder! It was easier to remain perched precariously on this concrete sculpture, terrified as I was, than to try to climb onto the ladder.

I called down to the plaza below, and some kind workmen agreed to assist me to get onto the ladder. It seemed pretty flimsy to me, and it had to be pushed over towards me so that I could gain a foothold. Two workmen held the ladder closer to me, one on each side, while a third climbed up in front of me to guide me. He assured me that the ladder was quite safe, and he adjusted it so that I could climb on, and then he told me that I had to lean out into space, let go of my handholds on the dome and grab the ladder! This was the scariest part of all. I had to let go of what little security I had in order to climb down to safety. I was frozen with fear. Then a fourth workman climbed up, got right next to me and held my arm tightly, while I finally reached out and grabbed the ladder. Once I was on the ladder, relief washed over me and the strain lifted off me. I was soon climbing down to the plaza below to the welcoming cheers of the people. What a dream!

I awoke from this dream realizing that it was an analogy of life. We create sculptures in our lives and we get ourselves into difficult circumstances. And when we look again, we find ourselves in scary situations. We realize that things are getting worse and that we have to do something before it’s too late. Often, we don’t even see the solutions / ladders available to us, as we’re blinded by panic and blindfolded by stress. And, when we do see the ladders, we perceive our present situation as being less dangerous than climbing out onto that precarious looking ladder, don’t we? We want what those people in the plaza below have so badly, yet we’re paralyzed, and the more we analyze the situation, the harder it gets to break free.

Those of us in the plaza below see the casualties, the broken lives and the bankruptcies of those who wait too long on those high, slippery domes they have built. It’s sad to know that there were solutions and salvation, ladders and liberation available to them, but they chose not to take advantage of it. And we do understand how difficult it is to make the transition from our current situation.

So, what we need are those caring and skilled workmen to get up here on this dangerous dome with us and help us get onto the ladder. Fortunately, there are good people who can assist us and there are many tools available as well. But we have to call those workmen and tell them we need their help. And, when they kindly offer it, we have to be prepared to take their advice and follow their instructions if we want to party in the plaza and enjoy the relief and peace of mind that is available to us at the bottom of the ladder. That ladder might be our own business, a diet, Alcoholics Anonymous, business solutions, a spiritual path or marriage counselling. The good news is that there are solutions and there are wonderful people to help you. For your own sake, and for the sake of those who love you, grab the ladder.

Robert0 asked:

Looking to defuel a number of old growth fir trees (dead limbs only), but they are a ways up there…thinking a 40ft ladder with “wings”, two spotters, and my mini Stihl should take a good swipe at it.
Plan to secure the top with rope/harness prior to cutting as well. Not trying to win a Darwin Award or You Tube vid!

Fibreglass Ladders a Safety Perspective

Amanda King asked:

Ladders are made from a variety of materials. The Most popular ladders are made of wood or aluminium but fibreglass is probably the safest and the best. Fibreglass, which is sometimes referred to, as glass fibre is made of extremely fine fibres of glass. The mass production of fibreglass began in the late nineteenth century however modern fibreglass was invented in 1938 by Russell Games Slayter of Owens-Corning as a product to be used as insulation.

Fibreglass is non-corrosive and has a much longer life expectancy when compared to a variety of construction materials. Where the environment is highly corrosive fibreglass stands up a lot better than metal, wood, or plastic. Therefore fibreglass is a popular choice where exposure to harsh environments is a concern, Fibreglass provides resistance to ultra violent light, extreme temperatures, salt. air, and a variety of chemicals including most acids. Fibreglass is chemically inert and corrosion-resistant and therefore it provides an economical advantage to wood and aluminium. Fibreglass also has a High strength to weight ratio and high flexural strength. It is an attractive lightweight material that builds strength into almost any finished product or component. Pound for pound fibreglass can be stronger than steel and sheet metals. With these factors fibreglass becomes an excellent product to be used in the manufacture of ladders.

An added problem with aluminium ladders is that they are a good conductor of electricity. This reduces their use by those in the electrical trade. It is possible to get electrocuted using aluminium ladders if they are used in time of storms or in some way located close to an electrical outlet.

Fibreglass however is more expensive than wood and aluminium, which leads to the higher cost for ladders made from fibreglass. Nevertheless the extra cost of fibreglass may well be worth the added cost because safety should be the first consideration of any tradesman or handyman. Every year hundreds to thousands of workers die or become disabled through workplace ladder accidents. Ladder accidents come about through an improper selection of a ladder. Therefore before buying a ladder take safety into account and be aware that one of the main causes of ladder accidents is through electrical shocks and instability of ladders. Something, which a fibreglass ladder may be able to avoid. Thankfully the price of fibreglass ladders has been falling making them more affordable and an inducement for the safety conscious buyer of trade and domestic equipment.

Fibreglass ladders can come in a number of different styles and sizes. They can also come in collapsible and extension forms. This may make them suited to particular needs. Therefore there is really no reason why when buying a ladder that the fibreglass ladder should be overlooked from a safety and versatility perspective.

A Few Thoughts on Above Ground Pool Ladders

Jakob Ronaldsen asked:

If you are considering having an above ground pool installed in your backyard then there are a number of items that you are going to have to think about. One of the pool accessories that you are going to have to look over and make a decision on is above ground pool ladders. For instance, you have to decide if you are going to install one or two of them.

If you have small children that are going to be playing in the pool then you may want to consider having more than one pool ladder installed on your pool. This is because to a small child, a pool is a big place and combine that with the fact that the water is over their head even in the shallow end.

Also, often times older children can play rougher then a younger child would prefer and they will need a quick way to exit the pool. If you are going to have teens using the pool then you will want to take that into consideration also when selecting an above ground pool ladder.

Teens require a more durably built ladder with solid handles, because of the way that they can tear around a pool playing rough pool games. This means that they’re going to be charging up the ladder sometimes two at a time.

Fortunately there is now a broad choice in above ground pool ladders to select from and they also come in several price ranges as well. Now is the time to begin looking at them and coming to a solid conclusion on which direction you are going to go with regards to your pool ladder.

It is important to bear in mind that it is often times better to spend a little more in the front end and get it right the first time if you are undecided then to to have to go back and buy a pool ladder or ladders twice, because you were wrong the first time around.

Defective Ladder Causes Injuries

Su Piercy asked:

Contact William Muhr, LLP if you have an XTend & Climb Ladder model 770 telescoping ladder and have suffered injuries due to a fall from it because of a faulty locking mechanism.   We have a client who fell off the ladder when the locking mechanism failed to function properly and suffered serious and permanent injuries.

Unfortunately, Core Distribution, the maker of the ladder, has not recalled the faulty model, even though they have issued a replacement model.  The defective ladder is silver and black, and the replacement model is  yellow and silver.

The XTend & Climb Ladder model 770 telescoping ladder is designed to be portable and easy to use.  It works by being compact, about two or three feet tall, and then it extends to the length of a regular ladder.  Thus there are two locking mechanisms for each step, so that as you extend it, each step locks into place.  In our client’s case, one of the steps did not fully lock into place, and the ladder lacked a positive locking mechanism so our client could not see that the locks had not fully engaged.  Our client had climbed to the top of the ladder to work when one step collapsed beneath him, causing the ladder to fall with him on it.

If you have been injured as a result of using the faulty XTend & Climb Ladder model 770, call William Muhr, LLP today.  Call 800-934-4529 for a free consultation with an experienced attorney.
