How do I put a ladder on a sloped driveway?

joe h asked:

Hello,
I have a driveway that comes down and wraps around the house. I’ll estimate it at slightly under 45 degrees. I need to get up a ladder to install a bathroom vent on the second floor from that side. How do I place a ladder on my sloped driveway without it tipping over? Sounds like a math problem, but its not! Thanks for any useful advice.

CD Laddering

MonitorBankRates.com asked:

Laddering a Certificate of Deposit

CD Laddering is a investment strategy used when interest rates are rising, usually when the economy is strong and the Federal Reserve is raising interest rates to prevent the economy from over heating and fanning inflation. Though interest rates can rise during a slower economic environment, during "stagflation times" like we had in the 1970’s and we might have again.

The longer the certificate of deposit term, the higher the interest rate or interest yield usually is, unless the yield curve is inverted. Longer CD terms also may result in a loss of investment opportunity to lock in higher interest rates during a rising economy.  A common investment strategy when CD rates are rising is CD Laddering.

How CD Laddering Works

The strategy used in a CD Ladder is to evenly spread out the CD deposits over a period of several years, with the end result being the CD investor has all of his/her monies deposited in longer term CDs which pay a higher rate of return, but still has a CD mature every year, this way the investor benefits from investing in higher CD rates and has the option to re-invest in longer term CDs or to withdrawal the money.

Example of a CD Laddering Strategy

We will use a three year strategy with $30,000 for this example. The CD investor deposits $10,000 in a 3 year CD, $10,000 in a 2 year CD and $10,000 in a 1 year CD.

After year one, the 1 year $10,000 CD matures, the CD investor then invests the money in a 3 year CD. After year two, the 2 year $10,000 CD matures, the CD investor invests in another 3 year CD. After two years all the monies are invested in 3 year CDs at a higher interest rate, again, this only works  in a rising interest rate economic environment.

Steel Ladders

Camille Howe asked:

School maintenance crews can use them for quick access to problem areas to prevent a number of problematics from interrupting the educational process. Homeowners can use smaller steel ladders for extra weight capacity and more convenient storage options in limited space. Warehouses can use almost any steel ladder for both material handling needs and shipping and receiving process flows. Steel is the strongest, most cost effective material metal for the strength it represents. As such, steel ladders can weather wear and tear more effectively than ladders made from lighter metals, and they can also provide a much more stable platform for material handling due to their ability to support greater weight capacity without slipping or buckling.

Any storage facility can improve both safety and efficiency with steel ladders. Because steel remains firm under greater amounts of pressure, steel ladders offer a secure platform upon which a person can ascend or descend without losing balance due to ladder sway. Steel ladders provide easy and safe access to products on high shelves. Any number of Steel Rolling Ladders found in online warehouse’s could safely support both a human’s weight and the weight of products and supplies being vertically moved along the ladder. Smaller steel stepladders are a favorite for school district and apartment complex maintenance crews who are responsible for everything from changing light bulbs to working on overhead light fixtures and plumbing. Loading docks are relying more and more upon steel ladders and certain key features they offer to crews loading and unloading trucks during both daytime and nighttime hours.

The benefits some companies may offer with their many steel ladder designs derive directly from key features innate to each particular ladder design. Steel rolling ladders are built for multifunctionality and safety foremost in mind. Each model features an exclusive, lockable safety gate that prevents access by children and unauthorized personnel. Pushing the gate forward will raise the casters off the floor and allow for safe ladder access. This also locks the ladder into place so it will not slip under content pressure. With a 350 pound load capacity, Easy Rack rolling steel ladders can support a worker and any carried supplies. When a worker no longer needs the ladder, pulling the safety gate backward will lower the casters to the floor and allow the ladder to be moved.

Other steel ladders offer specific improvements to efficiency, material handling, and material storage in a number of unexpected, but nonetheless essential, environments. Docks are excellent examples of this type of area. Characterized by heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic during all hours of the day and night, they can be incredibly accident prone in terms of inadvertent collisions between trucks and equipment.

Aluminum ladders often do not do too well in docks for obvious reasons.

By the same token, though, docks benefit from the additional safety features that Walk-Thru Ladders deliver to their shipping and receiving personnel. Even in the best of light, workers on the night crew can easily misjudge distance and injure themselves or valuable products with and inadvertent collision with a standard ladder. Walk-Thru steel ladders solve this problem by providing a secondary passage space between the ladder base and the wall. The ladder mounts to the dock face either by welding or bolting. Workers moving up and down on the ladder can maintain better balance with the extra high handrails these steel ladders feature. Every Walk-Thru Dock ladder projects out 8 1/2″ from the face of the dock and gives employees plenty of room to navigate without a collision.

These ladders can feature a powder coat finish that helps better protect them against both collision and natural material degradation. Their ability to endure impact makes them far more reliable in smaller warehouses than aluminum ladders that can suffer significant damage or scarring from accidental collisions.

Choosing the Right Ladder for Your Home

Matt Cooper asked:

There are many different styles, materials and uses of ladders. With all the options out there, how do decide what is right for your home. In this article I will explain the advantages and disadvantages of several of the main ladder types, to help you make an informed buying decision for your home.

There are three materials in which most ladders are made from. Each of these materials offer specific benefits and will behave differently depending on the use.

Aluminum Ladders

Ladders made with Aluminum offer a lightweight and strong alternative to other ladder types. The benefits to this are obvious, allowing for transportation and use of the ladder with ease. The aluminum ladder is also resistant to most normal wear and tear gained by ladders made of other materials. Aluminum also does not need coating and will not crack like it’s wooden counterpart. One of the newest aluminum ladders is the little giant ladder system.

Disadvantages: Aluminum ladders can’t be used in situations involving intense heat or electricity due to its conductive nature.

Wood Ladders

The wood ladder is the traditional ladder type. Most wood ladders are made of a combination of hardwoods and softwoods, which result in a very strong ladder. Wood ladders also do not conduct electricity, so they can be used in places where aluminum ladders cannot.

Disadvantages: Wood ladders tend to get very heavy compared to their aluminum counterpart. In addition, they need a varnish to help preserve the life of the wood. Wood ladders are also susceptible to aging such as cracks and rot.

Fiberglass Ladders

Fiberglass ladders are the newest form of ladder. Fiberglass is a man-made material that, like wood, doesn’t conduct electricity when dry. Fiberglass is also a very dense material, and can be exposed to high temperatures for short periods of time without weakening and will generally regain its previous strength once removed from the heat. Fiberglass also doesn’t crack or rot such as wood when left outside in certain weather.

Disadvantages:

While fiberglass seems to combine the advantages of both aluminum and wood ladders, it also has unique disadvantages. The density of fiberglass makes these ladders very heavy, heavier than wood and aluminum. In addition fiberglass can crack when under great pressure or impact.

Knowing these specific advantages and disadvantages to ladder types, you can now asses what type is right for you. Ask yourself questions such as: Will I be doing a lot of ladder work outside? Will I be working near power lines? Will I have another person there to help me carry and setup the ladder?

Once you answer these questions you can see what type of ladder lends itself to your specific needs. And always, if you are not sure how to safely use your ladder, make sure you consult an expert.
